Mind Map (201)
My Mind Map Summary
What are you PASSIONATE about?
Core Values: My most important core value is independence. I am an introvert and need my alone time once in a while. Having time to myself to be able to think and relax is very important to me. Also, I have dreamed of living in San Diego since I was a child and I do not want to give up the location. Although in the hotel industry there is a high chance of relocation, it is something I am not willing to give up for now. Lastly, having family close to me is very important. I’d like to be able to see them once in a while to provide love and comfort.
Career Goals: One of my short-term goals is to decide whether I want to stay in hotel emphasis or switch to meetings and events. After having our guest speaker talk about her everyday life as a meetings and events coordinator, it opened my eyes to that career path. Another goal is to get hired for an internship in the emphasis I choose to pursue. On the other hand, as a long-term goal, I would like to graduate with employment upon graduation. I hope to have this job in San Diego, but I may be willing to relocate, depending on the circumstances. I would also like to earn a higher position by becoming a manager in hotels or meetings and events.
Top Strengths: Currently, I have a few skills that I consider my top strengths. Being responsible and working hard is a strength that I have always had. Those skills have been ingrained in my mind. I also have great problem solving skills and conflict resolution. These are skills that I have acquired through experience, skills that takes time and practice. Working as a hostess for many years, I have become use to being the ‘face’ of the problem. The frequency of this occurring forced me to learn quickly how to take care of issues.
Desired Strengths: I have always had issues with time management. I am sometimes late to work because I underestimate how long it will take me to get ready and how long it will take me to get to work. I’d like to work on this skill so that I can show up to work on time and not have to rush myself. I would also like to work on my optimism, since I can be a bit negative at times. I’d like to learn how to go into work with the right mindset and stay optimistic throughout the workday. Lastly, I’d like to become more networked. I plan on doing this by attending job fairs as well as expanding my connections on LinkedIn.
Role Models: My biggest role model is my father, James Severance. When he was 23, he moved to Japan without knowing anything about their language or culture. He got a very high-paying, stable job in Tokyo at a very young age. I am inspired by his courage to move to a foreign country, especially during that time period. My other role model is Maria Baum, a mother of a very good friend of mine. She is a very strong female figure who has fought breast cancer over many years while continuing to work. Maria is beautiful, courageous, and very intelligent. Her success has always inspired me as it has to many others. I hope to one day be as successful as Maria and my father.
- Having a balance between relationships, social life, and work. I have to be able to have a social life aside from work to destress and enjoy myself. Without it, I would be stressful too often.
- I am passionate about making people happy by going the extra mile. Making sure customers know I am taking good care of them is what I am passionate about. Making them happy makes me happy.
- I am passionate about exploring new strategies and problem-solving. There are always newer and more efficient ways to go about situations. Creating efficiency in a work area is another thing I enjoy.

My Mind Map Summary
My Big WHY? The reason why I want to work in the hospitality industry is because I enjoy making others happy. I feel uplifted when I go above and beyond for a customer and their face lights up. Creating a memorable experience for customers is what I strive to do every day.
My Network: I feel that I lack in my networking competency because I don’t like socializing with strangers. However, I am aware of all the benefits of knowing industry professionals, so I want to improve by attending more networking events like association events. Patrick Higgins is an industry professional that I look up to, who I also received feedback from on the simulation project. Will Kelly is another industry professional that I have known for years from New York, who also offered me a job here in San Diego. I look up to both of these professionals with the upmost respect and desire to be as successful as they are one day.
Experience: Currently I work for an event company called Contemporary Services Corporation as event staff. I have also worked as an event staff at RaceLegal for multiple years. I have customer service skills from working in the hospitality industry since I was just 15 years old, working as a hostess, receptionist, etc. Recently I also volunteered at a reception on campus for the James and the Giant Peach event which allowed me to see how an event flows and how it is set up and broken down.
Execution Strategies: My goal before I graduate is to get an internship with an event company. I want to be able to work different positions within the company to learn how each department operates, so that I have a better idea of what I want to do in the future. Another strategy is to simply reach out to the companies to see if they are hiring, so that I can work for my ideal company.
Ideal Company: My ideal company is Hard Rock hotel. I interviewed the catering sales manager for this class and learned a lot about the company through her experience working there. I love the idea of a more “relaxed” corporate company, which is what intrigues me. They also have many properties in many countries. Another ideal company is The Wild Thyme Company, which is a catering and event company in San Diego. I became interested in working with this company when I saw photos of beautiful events they planned in the past.
Ideal Professional Self: My ideal professional self is someone that people look up to, but also can confide in and feel comfortable around. I also would like to be someone who is able to remain calm and act in a poise manner in any type of conflict whether it’s between a customer or with employees. I believe that it is experience that will help me develop into that ideal person.
