Networking is a crucial element to the hospitality industry, because you never know when an opportunity may arise. Olga Worm is the CEO of San Diego's catering company, Bekker's Catering. I was lucky enough to shadow her for a project in HTM 480 last semester and observe her leadership skills. I learned quickly that she was a very hands-on leader, as she was always involved on the floor. Not only does she help plan every detail of the events, she also goes to many of the events to help with the employees physically. Watching how she was with her employees and how they all had a close relationship with her was great because they all treated each other like family. Olga had told me about the numerous times she helped less fortunate employees by paying for their dental bills, buying them cars, and even provide places for them to sleep in her own home. I learned that as a leader, I would want to have a close relationship with my employees, because I saw how much they cared about her and would work that much harder as an employee.
After the leadership shadow assignment, I decided to send her an email thanking her for helping me with my project. When she replied, she offered me a job at Bekker's. I never anticipated this project to be more than an assignment, but I was offered a new job and I wasn't even looking. I was so excited to work at Bekker's because I had never done catering but always wanted to. I started working there that same weekend, and absolutely fell in love. I worked for many different evens such as corporate meetings, weddings, community events, etc. My passion for events and food were heightened, as I learned so much about how to put on events and how to properly handle food and beverages. At the same time, I learned even more about Olga and what makes her such a successful leader. This opportunity is a great example of why networking is so important and how opportunities can arise out of nowhere.
